Android 4.5 May Break Compatibility with Many Current Root Apps

Much of Android's development is done out in the open, which is how several Android developers noticed that a recent commit to the Android Open Source Project master tree would break many of your favorite root apps. This is the result of a newly implemented security feature, rather than an active effort to lock things down on Google's part.

A little over a week ago, a pair of commits were made to the AOSP master tree that essentially prevent SU from executing files stored on the /data partition. This is an issue because many (but not all) current root apps include files that are extracted to and executed from app-specific directories on this partition. As such, if these commits are not reverted, a large number of current root-enabled apps will need be updated in order to work with this new version of Android.
So if you’re an app developer responsible for creating root-enabled apps, how can you get around these changes? Well, XDA Senior Recognized Developer Chainfire has you covered with a few potential workarounds that were added to his How-To SU page. These workarounds include extracting the code and running it from RAM or rootfs, piping commands directly to SU, and so on.

Now, it’s important to keep in mind that these two commits may be reverted before the release of the next version of Android. Furthermore, if they are retained, it’s anybody’s guess as to the actual version number of this upcoming revision. That said, it’s obviously best to be safe rather than sorry so that you can save yourself and your users the hassle later.
Head over to Chainfire’s Google+ Post to learn more about the changes and what they could mean for the next version of Android. And if you’re developing a root-enabled app and you want to be sure that you are ready for these changes, be sure to check out Chainfire’s How-To SU Page.

Look At Alleged Samsung UI Experimentation From @evleaks Shows More Possible Predictive Cards

The @evleaks has offered up another look at Samsung's alleged UI experimentation, this time showing what would appear to be predictive search or information cards, similar to those offered by Google Now. Split into two parts, the collection shows everything from home temperature automation to exercise tracking to flight info, package tracking, appointments, and plenty more.
What differentiates the cards from Google's own service (design aside) is apparent social integration beyond birthdays and commutes. We can see, for example, evidence of check-in or location sharing and media sharing alongside the other cards.

Back up and Restore your Windows 8 Start screen layout

The Windows 8 Start screen is the gateway to your PC and usually the first thing you see when you log in, unless you've chosen to go directly to the desktop

Whether you use the Start screen only on occasion or rely on it heavily, you've probably spent some time setting it up just the way you like it. To save you from having to go through it again when you reinstall Windows or if your Start screen gets rearranged accidentally, you can back up your layout and restore it later. Here's how:
Step 1: Open the Run dialog box by hitting Windows key + R.
Step 2: Type, "%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows" and hit Enter to open Windows Explorer to the location of the Start screen layout files.
Open Windows Explorer
Step 3: Copy the files, "appsFolder.itemdata-ms" and "appsfolder.itemdata-ms.bak" to your backup folder.

If something happens to your Start screen layout and you want to restore it, just copy the backup files back to the original location and overwrite the files already in the folder..

New Android Powered Nokia Normandy Shots Point to WP-Styled UI, Lumia-Like Body!

Ever since we caught our first glimpses of the alleged Android-powered Nokia Normandy, leaks have been popping up left and right. While some are quick to label a Nokia-built Android device as the Holy Grail of smartphones, others aren’t too impressed with the interface shots seen till date.

Now, from the recent Twitter leakers @evleaks and @vizileaks, we have a very clear shot of the alleged device’s outer casing, as well as new leaked screenshots that appear to indicate two general ways in which the Normandy’s UI can be navigated.

The first interface mode is a tile-based interface, highly reminiscent of Windows Phone’s live tiles. It’s unknown at this time whether these tiles are dynamic. But given Android’s support for widgets, that can be expected.

Several key details spotted in previous leaks are still present in both interface modes. The device’s status bar still shows off its dual-SIM capabilities, and the UI featured in the first interface mode seems consistent with both the leaked render and leaked shot we already saw.

In addition to the UI, we now have a much clearer view of the alleged device’s body. Styled remarkably similarly to Nokia’s current Lumia phones, it’s not hard to see a family resemblance.

Windows 9 reportedly to be announced in April 2014, released in April 2015

At the BUILD developer conference in April 2014, Microsoft will discuss its vision for the future of Windows, including a year-off release codenamed "Threshold" that will most likely be called Windows 9. Here's what I know about the next major release of Windows.
Rumors of the next major Windows release codenamed “Threshold” have been circling for some time now, but Paul Thurott has now revealed further details on the next version of Windows.

Threshold will reportedly bring a number of major changes to Windows 8, such as the return of the Start Menu and the beginning of a converged platform encompassing Windows Phone and Windows RT. The company is also working on delivering a single app store across Xbox, Windows Phone and Windows.
Thurott mentions that “Threshold” will likely be titled Windows 9 to “distance the company from the Windows 8 debacle” because “Windows 8 is tanking harder than Microsoft is comfortable discussing in public.”
It’s true that Windows 8 has struggled to gain rapid adoption; even with the major tweaks in Windows 8.1 (which is free) the company has not seen more than 25 million PCs install the update, according to Thurott. Windows 8 adoption still lags behind that of Windows 7, despite having been on the market for over a year.
Traditionally, Microsoft releases a preview of an upcoming version of Windows at its BUILD conference (which will be held in April of this year). Instead of previewing a full new version of Windows this year, Thurott believes that the conference will see the release of an interim update labeled “Windows 8.1 Update 1″ alongside the release of Windows Phone 8.1.
Thurott’s sources believe that Windows 9 will be delivered in April 2015 with major changes that refine and develop the Modern UI interface (please, give us windowed mode for Modern apps!) as well as potentially splitting Windows into consumer and enterprise versions.
Delivering Windows 9 in 2015 means that Windows 8 will have been available for almost three years and may mean that consumers will look elsewhere for tablet devices.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lite specs, photos leaked

Samsung unveiled its new line of professional-grade tablets at the Consumer Electronics Show this year, it did not showcase any smartphones. However, the launch of the rumoured Galaxy Note 3 Lite seems imminent, with several photos and specifications of the model leaking online.

Until the device is officially launched by Samsung, the name is sort of up in the air. Just a couple of days ago, it was reported that the Note 3 Neo would sport a hexa-core processor, a new variation of ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture – with two 1.7GHz cores coupled with four 1.3GHz cores. For what’s being labeled as a cheaper version of the regular Galaxy Note 3, that is quite the move by Samsung.
In these newly-leaked photos from SamMobile, we can see that the Note 3 Neo will feature a slightly smaller display (5.55″) than the Galaxy Note 3 (5.7″), but the overall design is pretty much the same. There will be faux leather, an S Pen, and the TouchWiz UI. As for internals, the Note 3 Neo is said to sports 2GB of RAM, an 8MP camera, a 3,100mAh battery, and a microSD slot for additional storage.
Earlier reports and posts stated that Samsung could wait for MWC to launch this device, but with pictures now making the rounds, we wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung just announced the device with a press release. While the hexa-core chip is neat, it doesn’t necessarily warrant its own fancy unveiling event.

How to prevent Google+ users from e-mailing you

Worried of Getting Frustating Emails from the Users of Google Plus ? This is Because Other Google+ users can now send you e-mail without even knowing your Gmail address. But you can easily opt out of that.

On Thursday, the search giant announced a new feature that would let anyone on Google+ e-mail fellow users without having to find out their actual Gmail address. Respond to such an e-mail, and your address is then revealed to the other person.
Anticipating that many people might not want to receive e-mail from total strangers, Google lets you fine-tune this setting. Here's how:
Google+
  1. Open your Gmail account. Click on the gear icon in the top right and select Settings from the menu.
  2. In the General tab on the Settings page, look for the section that says: Email via Google+.
  3. Click on the dropdown menu next to   "Who can email you via your Google+ profile?"   You can pick one of four choices: Anyone on Google+, Extended Circles, Circles, or No One.
  4. Make your selection and then click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.

Google has also posted a Help page to explain how to tweak this setting. The new feature will roll out to all Gmail and Google+ users over the next couple of days, according to Google. When that happens, you'll receive an e-mail with more information and a link to the setting. But with the steps above, you can control the new feature before it even reaches you.

View Instagram in a slick, new way with Negatives on your iPhone

Negatives is a free iOS app that's perfect for Instagram lurkers. If you like to follow your friends' photos rather than post your own, Negatives gives you a new way to browse Instagram.

Negatives organizes each of your friend's Instagram photos into a filmstrip of thumbnails. Your friends are grouped chronologically; the friend with the most recent post is listed at the top.

You can swipe on each filmstrip to view a friend's photo thumbnails, while tapping on a thumbnail expands it. When viewing an expanded photo, you can swipe sideways to browse the previous or next photo in that feed's chronology.

When viewing an expanded photo, the poster's comment (if there is one) sits above the photo, while the number of likes and comments is listed below. While you can see the number of likes a photo has garnered, you can see who has liked the photo. Similarly, you can read comments of a photo by tapping the comment icon but you can't add your own. Lastly, if you see a hashtag in a comment, you can tap on it to open a filmstrip of photos with that hashtag.

At the top of the app's home page is a search button, but the search functionality is very limited. It lets you search only for usernames and not by keyword or hashtag.

Gmail for Web Integrates Google+ Contacts to Help Find People More Easily

Google is Making Gmail Better than Now by introducing Several noticible Changes.Recently Google Has introduced their latest round of further Google+ integration. To help with those times when you forgot to grab a friend’s work or home email address, Gmail for web will start suggesting your Google+ contacts as email recipients.

Email addresses are like phone numbers - who memorizes more than a handful these days? For years, cranking out a new email has begun with typing a few letters and clicking on the relevant contact that pops up (occasionally followed by frantic deleting and carefully selecting the correctcontact).

Soon Gmail users will have an even broader pool of names to select from, as Google+ connections will start to appear below saved contacts when typing out a recipient.
